It is and it isn’t at the same time. If you get a fresh double IPA from a local brewery that knows what they are doing it will be just as good. The thing is that they kinda started the whole double ipa hoppy beer trend and they do it well.

You know what really blew my mind the first time I went there was their wine barrel aged sour beers. They are incredible if you like that style of beer.

I am lucky to have family in Santa Rosa so I have an excuse to stop by the brewery quite often.

I wish I could get Pliny where I live just to say I have tried it at least once. I’m not a big IPA fan though so I feel I probably wouldn’t care for it. That and I probably have as much of a chance trying it as I would Westvleteren.

Here is a tip, go to the grocery store and get some Sierra Nevada Torpedo. Check the bottling date and if it is somewhat fresh but it. Pop one open, pour it in a glass, and take a big gulp while breathing in with your nose. If you say to “yourself wow that’s really good” make an effort to score some pliney sometime. If you say “you know I don’t care much for this kind of beer” then I wouldn’t bother.

Also check out your local micro breweries if you don’t already. I can almost guarantee that they have beer that is just as good. Shoot I make beer in my garage that is arguably just as good. Since ipas are pretty straightforward as far as the ingredients go it’s all about getting beer as fresh as possible.

Don’tget me wrong though, pliney is a damn fine brew. Something to measure everything else against.
